Adults
Parents are partners in all BHK programs, but some services are designed especially for adults!

Finishing high school requirements will help you and your family get ahead in life. Parents and single adults can finish a high school or earn a GED. Adult students receive home visits and take part in center activities that include use of computer labs. Computer classes are available, too! In cooperation with local high schools, a special option exists for pregnant mothers who want to stay in school. In addition to adult literacy skills, students may take parenting education classes, parent-child literacy activities and early childhood education. Home visits and center activities take place throughout the three-county area.

Families at risk of having their infant or toddler removed from the home may benefit from the New Start program. New Start helps families at risk of separation to stay intact. The program includes a two-month residential component where families interact daily with a couple experienced in child development and family life. After completing the live-in portion, families receive regular home visits that focus on child development, parenting and other issues.

Caregiver CLub
The Caregiver Club provides non-parental caregivers of children birth to 5 with education and support to foster healthy growth and development in children. Services include up to two 60-minute educational home visits per month, socialization opportunities through playgroups and a Grandparents Support Group, training opportunities such as baby-sitting classes and loaner child development resources such as toys, books, videos and music. To learn more, call Caroline Penny at 482-3663 or 800-236-5657.

Adults who want to make a difference in the community may want to sign up for a year of service with Superior AmeriCorps. Adults age 18 and older serve the local community in this program, which is often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps. Members commit to one year of service in schools, childcare centers and other human-service agencies. In return, members receive a living allowance, educational award, health and childcare benefits, educational loan forbearance and professional training. Visit the Superior AmeriCorps homepage for more information.

Pregnant mothers and their partners may take part in the Pregnancy Education and Support (PEAS) program, which provides an informative home visit; fun, educational group meetings; and a safe, gentle exercise program. The PEAS program is a great way to meet others who are expecting a child or adjusting to being new parents. Funding is through the Healthy Tomorrows Partnership for Children project, sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Family wellness services provide fitness activities, support services and information for families with infants and toddlers. Fitness areas with cardiovascular, strength-training equipment and multi-purpose areas allow children and parents to work out together or separately! Family-empowering wellness classes take place periodically with topics ranging from stress reduction and nutritious cooking on a budget to money management and more!

Many extra resources and activities are available for parents with young children. To learn more, click here.
