Superior AmeriCorps Service
Projects
Members join forces to plan, participate in, and execute
four major service project events each year. Volunteers
are welcomed and appreciated. The service projects are
as follows: |
|
Make
A Difference Day
Each year on the last Saturday in October, Superior
AmeriCorps members take part in a Make A Difference Day
service project. Make A Difference Day is a national effort
sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine to encourage community
service. While the individual project changes from year to
year, one thing remains constant: the commitment to
improving the local community. Past efforts include making
fleece blankets for foster children, enhancing a Halloween
party for the elderly, preparing local school nature trails,
a blood drive and making improvements to playgrounds.
Planning for MADD projects begins in September. |

Martin
Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Every January,
Superior AmeriCorps members coordinate and implement a
service project in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., one of
America's most important civil rights leaders. The focus of
these projects changes each year, but every project is
intended to improve the local community. Past projects have
included holding an essay and poster contest for youth,
visiting the elderly, diversity presentations, food and
clothing drives and creating a mural with youth. Planning
for MLK Jr. Day projects begins in December.

Alcohol Awareness Month
The signature
service project of Superior AmeriCorps, Alcohol Awareness
Month, takes place each year in April. This event, seeks to
increase youth awareness on the use of alcohol and the
possible effects with hopes to decrease local underage
drinking through educational and alternative activities
including speeches, dances, mock accidents, sports
tournaments, and essay contests. Planning for AAM projects
begins in February. |
|
Final Service Project
The month of June
provides a time for members to plan and execute various
projects that assist the community. Past activities have
included assisting Copper Country Habitat for Humanity,
Bridgefest, Camp 911 and other local needs. Planning for AAM
projects begins in May. |
