Make a Difference

AmeriCorps has taught me so much about patience. Working with the special
education students has opened my eyes and showed me that everyone deserves
a chance. It has been great to work along side these teachers who, day-in
and day-out, put so much into their job. It makes me want to become a
better teacher.

AmeriCorps has made a difference with me personally. I have gained
substantial and valuable experience through both serving at my site, as
well as the monthly member trainings. My AmeriCorps experience will
benefit me in my future teaching endeavors, and in addition has motivated
me to obtain my Master's in Elementary Education. I make a difference by
serving with AmeriCorps.

AmeriCorps has opened the door for me to impact the lives of students.
Through this opportunity to mentor, the students have received extra
support in their education, both in and out of the classroom.
Additionally, through the continual, unconditional support they learn that
someone cares about them. This is a message students may not be receiving
anywhere else in life.

Here is a favorite quote of mine: There are many wonderful things that
will never be done if you don't do them. - Charles D. Gill

I feel that being a part of AmeriCorps has taught me so much about my
career choice. I have always wanted to have a home daycare and work with
young children. AmeriCorps has given me a chance to put my skills to the
test and also learn a few more. My experience in the classroom has been
so great and anyone who gets a chance to experience what I have, would be
silly to not take the opportunity.

At my site I was able to help a student write a story. This student was
not capable of writing a story in the past because he couldnā??t stay
focused. Once the story was finished it was a great feeling to hear is
mother say that she was so proud of him. This made me realize that I
helped a student make a difference in his life.

AmeriCorps has made a difference in both my life and the lives of the
students I serve. For my students, my help with homework and studying has
not only busted their grades but has also given my students the confidence
to know that they can do well in school. To see a student who hates
social studies, is failing the subject, and doesn't care, completely turn
around is inspiring. I have been reminded of the difference I can make in
students lives. This is why i wanted to be a teacher in the first place.
AmeriCorps has been a wonderful experience for me and my students. It is
something I will never forget.
